Soothing the Red Itch: Managing the Effects of Eczema

Oscar Wilde famously proclaimed that the best way to make children good is to make them happy. As parents, this quote exemplifies our commitment to making the lives of our family happy and fulfilling. That's why when they feel discomfort that stems from bouts of eczema, our first instinct is: How can we make the pain go away?

While the unsettling feeling from uncontrollable itchiness affects people of all ages, its effects are most noticeable in children. Eczema can deprive growing infants of the nourishing effects of sleep. On the other hand, pre-teen children may find playtime with their peers spoiled by the vexing sensation of rashes on their skin. Because the young members of our family are the most vulnerable, we should know what eczema is and what we can do when it happens. As we live in a pandemic, going to the doctor may not be as easy as before.

Eczema, or Atopic Dermatitis, is a common condition among children that makes their skin unusually red and incredibly itchy. It is a chronic condition and, in most cases, flares up periodically. According to Dr. Ma. Victoria Dizon, a pediatric dermatologist, the visible signs of eczema are the following:

  • An itchy rash

  • Dry and rough on the skin. In some cases, the rash may ooze

  • Redness with scales

  • Thickened scratch marks and scabs

  • Swelling

The exact cause of eczema varies from person to person. When bacteria, allergens, heat, sweat, dust, and pollution find their way to delicate skin, bouts of itchiness can ensue. Dr. Dizon shares that atopic dermatitis in adults may come from "occupation-related causes" such as stress, while children may get theirs from allergen exposures from playing outside. Even when eczema presents itself as nothing but a reddish mark, leaving it alone may make our child more vulnerable to bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. Altogether, it is best to keep a watchful eye and treat eczema before it gets worse.

When it comes to children's safety, it is best to safeguard their immunity and protection.

Although eczema may bother your child's playtime, there is no need to worry as there are many ways to deal with its symptoms. To prevent the flare-ups of rashes, we can use mild unscented soaps for baths or regular hand-washing. Another preventive measure is to apply moisturizer to the skin after showering, which Dr. Dizon states will "function as a preventive and repairing step to address the eczema problem." When outside, we can minimize the excessive use of alcohol and similar disinfectants as these chemicals tend to remove our skin's natural oils.
