What use is freedom if our bodies are burdened by illness, or if we lack the knowledge and tools to make healthy choices? This June, as we wave our flags and celebrate Philippine Independence Day, it’s also time to reflect on how health and wellness are deeply connected to the freedoms we cherish.
The freedom our ancestors fought for was political, but today, we face a different kind of struggle: the ability to make informed, empowered choices that affect our well-being. Whether it's choosing what food we eat, how we move our bodies, or how we take care of our mental health, these decisions are acts of autonomy.
Health is a form of personal independence. When we are well, we are able to fully enjoy life, support our families, chase our dreams, and be active members of our communities. On the other hand, when we’re unwell, especially due to preventable diseases, we feel limited and disconnected.
In recent years, more Filipinos have become aware of how what we eat affects how we live. But access to “healthy options” isn't always easy. From processed snacks to sugary drinks, many affordable food choices today are convenient but not beneficial in the long run.
That said, having the power to choose wisely despite the noise is a form of modern-day kalayaan. Whether it's switching from sugary drinks to water, eating more vegetables, or learning how to cook at home, each small choice is a declaration: "Aalagaan ko ang sarili ko."
Filipinos today are also more conscious about checking labels, consulting healthcare professionals, and building daily routines around wellness. These aren’t trends, they’re signs of a society growing more aware of its rights and responsibilities when it comes to health.
Making empowered decisions means taking control of your lifestyle, saying yes to preventive care, and embracing activities that promote long-term wellness like walking, sleeping well, and managing stress. These are basic liberties that are sometimes taken for granted until health issues arise.
However, not everyone has equal access to health education, nutritious food, or medical care. Inequity remains a challenge. That's why part of celebrating independence is lifting others up, too.
From barangay-level health drives to community-based wellness initiatives, collective effort creates shared wellness. Being a kapitbahay means looking out for each other, not just when we’re sick, but also in the daily encouragement to live healthier lives.
Living well is a form of gratitude to those who fought for our freedoms. It’s also an act of love toward ourselves and future generations. We owe it to our families and our country to be the best versions of ourselves, not just emotionally and mentally, but physically too.
As we celebrate Independence Day this June, let’s remember: true kalayaan means being free to live without illness, to age with dignity, and to thrive in a body that allows us to chase joy.
Let’s continue making health-conscious choices not just for ourselves, but for a stronger, more empowered Pilipinas. — (MyPharma)
