For the prevention and treatment of folic acid deficiency (associated with decreased food intake, anorexia, restrictive
or deficient diet, alcoholism etc.).
- As adjunct or support in the management of colorectal carcinoma, ulcerative colitis, cervical dysplasia, sickle cell
diseases, and homocysteinemia (increased level of homocysteine in the blood is an emerging risk factor in
atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease).
- To correct decreased folate levels when taking the following folate antagonist drugs such as: methotrexate,
trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole, phenytoin (anti-convulsant), and oral contraceptive pills.
- For the prevention of birth defects, neural tube defects (NTD) i.e., spina bifida, anencephaly, oral and orofacial clefts,
congenital heart disease).
- For prophylaxis and treatment of nutritional megaloblastic anemia associated with folic acid deficiency, as in hemolytic
anemia, pernicious anemia, sprue, alcoholism, and that following gastrectomy.G9` |
